Fmr. Mo. Congressman Ike Skelton dies at 81
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former Missouri Congressman Ike Skelton has died. He was 81.
Skelton passed away Monday surrounded by friends and family at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., on Monday.
In a statement released by House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Adam Smith said:
Ike Skelton was a dedicated public servant committed to ensuring our national security and providing for the greater good. He was also a friend, a mentor and a truly unique individual.
Smith went on to say Skelton was a “fierce and relentless advocate for the men and women in uniform.”
Smith described Skelton as being a “giant in the lives of those who knew him.”
The cause of death is uncertain at this time, but the AP reports Skelton entered the hospital a week ago with a cough.
Skelton was a Lexington, Mo., native who served 17 terms in the U.S. House.
