KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The roads were slick Friday morning and there were numerous accidents -- something that keeps tow truck companies in business this time of year.

"Days like today are a little crazy," says Jon Kupchin, president of Santa Fe Towing.

Accidents happen, especially when conditions take a turn for the worse.

"A lot of slide-offs, a bunch of accidents from all the black ice and everything," Bobby Irvine, who has been driving tow trucks for nine years, said. "It's been pretty crazy."

On Friday Irvine helped a woman pull her Corvette out of the woods after she slid on black ice and spun off the road.

"We have to deal with not only the climate, but we're trying to accommodate the customers, and we deal with the traffic just like everybody else," Kupchin said.

He says this kind of weather is a headache for them just as much as it is for those who call them.

"If you do see a tow truck operator on the side of the road, scoot over, give us some room," he said. "We'd like to go home at night just like everybody else."

Working at a tow truck company, they've seen pretty much everything. based on their experience they have some advice for when mother nature takes over.

"The best thing to do is take your time," Kupchin said. "Just be cautious, and give plenty of distance between the car in front of you."

"Slow down, take it easy," adds Irvine.

Kupchin said they responded to 19 accidents Friday morning alone. Clay County received 30 calls regarding accidents. The roads could become slick again later Friday night, so just keep that in mind if you're planning on heading out.
