KANSAS CITY, Mo. --  A once homeless family now has a home for the holidays. Latoya Caldwell and her four children walked into their new home, decked out with a tree and presents on Thursday, thanks to a program called "Constructing Futures."

Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders founded the program five years ago and says it benefits the entire community. Latoya escaped an abusive relationship and until now, she and her children had been homeless since.

"This has been a long time coming.  It's been rough.  These past couple of years have been really rough for me and my children,” she said.

"Constructing Futures" has given away about one home a year. It's funded through the Jackson County legislature`s housing resources commission.

This mother fled her abuser, therefore protected her children. Yes, they ended up homeless, but in many abuse cases homelessness is safer than staying. She is a strong mother and a strong person. She deserved this house for what she did for herself and her children, regardless of her skin color.

Please just be happy for the blessing that this precious family has recieved. I am sure that this woman has worked harder than many of us can even imagine keeping this family as safe as she can. Spent many sleepless nights with worry and fear that I hope to never know. I myself am just wishing good things for them.
