From blizzard conditions in Minnesota to wind chills as low as 60 below in South Dakota, Old Man Winter is bearing down on much of the nation.

In Kansas City, we have bitter cold and strong winds to contend with -- and that's bringing a warning from metro firefighters.

Just after midnight, Overland Park firefighters put out a fire at a home in the 9600 block of 128th Terrace. The fire department says a carelessly put out cigarette is likely to blame.  Strong winds fed the fire.

Investigators said the dry and windy conditions are increase fire risks.

Thankfully, in this case firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire outside of the home and there was only minor damage to the inside of the home.
