DESOTO, Kan. — Two people are dead after an early morning crossover crash that happened around 1:20 Thursday morning along K-10 near Kill Creek Road.
A 45-year-old Kansas City, Mo., driver identified as Johnnie Royce Jackson was traveling east on K-10, lost control of his pickup truck and crashed into a Toyota Camry driven by Anthony Zevenbergen, 20, from Kansas City, Kan. Both men were pronounced dead when Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene.
Anthony was a freshman at Drake University. In an earlier story, we reported that Anthony was a student at Kansas University, but his parents tell FOX 4 that he was on his way to visit a friend in Lawrence.
“The driver of the pickup truck was thrown from his vehicle,” said Trooper Howard Dickinson. “The other driver had to be cut out. He was wearing a seatbelt, but driving at 70 miles per hour was unsurvivable.”
Kansas Highway Trooper Dickinson said while it’s early on in the investigation, typically crashes like this are caused by either alcohol or sleepy drivers.
The eastbound lanes of K-10 were closed for several hours, but they have since reopened.
