Man known to FBI, Frazier Cross Jr. suspected of hate crime murders of three people

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The 73-year-old man suspected in the deadly shootings at two Jewish facilities in Johnson County, Kan., has been identified as Frazier Cross Jr, who also goes by the name of  Glenn Frazier Miller.

The Overland Park Police Department announced Cross’s suspected involvement in a news conference on Tuesday. Formal charges are expected to be filed Tuesday. Police said they are classifying the shootings as a hate crime.

On Sunday, April 13, police said Cross shot and killed two people outside the Jewish Community Center — identified as 14-year-old Reat Underwood and his grandfather, Dr. William Lewis Corporon. Another person was shot and killed outside Village Shalom, an assisted living facility in Leawood, Kan. That person has been identified as Terri Lamanno. She was at Village Shalom visiting her mother when she was gunned down.

The Church of the Resurrection, a Methodist church in Leawood, confirmed that Underwood and Corporon were members of their congregation. They said the two were visiting the Jewish Community Center to participate in auditions for KC SuperStar, an “American Idol” style competition for high school singers in the metropolitan area, which was taking place there on Sunday.

Video of Underwood singing the National Anthem in 2013 at the Blue Valley Education Foundation was posted to YouTube. Watch it here.

Terri Lamanno was the 3rd victim of the deadly triple shooting on Sunday outside Village Shalom and JCC.

Terri Lamanno was the 3rd victim of the deadly triple shooting on Sunday outside Village Shalom and JCC.

Terri LaManno, 53, worked for eight years as an occupational therapist at the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired. She was visiting her mother at Village Shalom Sunday when the gunman shot and killed her. She leaves a husband and two children.

The suspect, Frazier Cross Jr. is from Aurora, Mo., and has been booked into jail in Johnson County. Authorities announced in a Monday news conference that he will face charges of premeditated murder. They said they have classified the crime as a hate crime and will take the case to a grand jury.

The shootings were first reported at 1:03 p.m. outside the Jewish Community Center at 115th and Nall. Minutes later they received a call on another active shooting situation outside Village Shalom Retirement Community at 123rd and Nall.

The suspect was arrested at Valley Park Elementary School at 123rd and Lamar. At a news conference Sunday evening, police were asked about reports that the suspect was heard yelling “Heil Hitler” while he was in the police car.

“The suspect in the back of the (police) car made several statements,” Chief Douglass said. “We are sifting through and vetting those for accuracy, number one, and number two, we’re looking at them for their evidentiary value. It’s too early to tell you what he may or may not have said, but we’re trying to determine what that was at this point in time.”

In all, the gunman shot at five people, police said. According to police, he used a shotgun. They were exploring the possibility that a handgun and an assault rifle were also involved.

What witnesses saw

The Jewish Community Center was on lockdown until shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday. There is a gym at that location, which witnesses say is typically very busy during the weekend. Several witnesses say they took cover in the locker rooms of the building, including FOX 4’s Melissa Stern, who was at the community center when shots were fired.

Another witness, Mike Metcalf, said he and his son were also at the community center when they heard gunfire.

Mike Metcalf was at the Jewish Community Center when he heard a gunshot and saw a man with a gun.

Mike Metcalf was at the Jewish Community Center when he heard a gunshot and saw a man with a gun.

“My son and I were walking into the Jewish Community Center this afternoon for an umpire clinic, around the west side, and all of the sudden we heard a gunshot, a pretty loud gunshot,” Metcalf said. “I turned to look to my right and I can see a man standing outside a car with a shotgun, what to me looked like a shotgun, and there was somebody laying on the ground.”

Metcalf said he yelled at his son to run as fast as he could.

“There are no words to express the senselessness of what happened this afternoon,” said Chief Douglass.

The back doors to the Jewish Community Center have extensive damage, according to police.

The Jewish Community Center’s Facebook page released the following statement on Sunday afternoon:

“Our hearts go out to the families who have suffered loss on this tragic day. Our heartfelt gratitude as well to all those in Kansas City and around the world who have expressed sympathy, concern and support.”

My thoughts and prayers to all affected by this act of insanity (spelled “hate” as in hate-crime. It should be prosecuted as such).
May G-d sooth and comfort the wounds your community has suffered today and bring abounding peace and grace to those who have lost.

  • don aycock

very sad thing to happen. Kansas has right to carry ccw law. to bad no armed citizen was there who could have shot him. this often happens in Israel which is why the terrorists went to bombs. may god bring peace to all.

  • Some Dude

LOTS of violence is taking place in Kansas City and its surrounding areas in the past few months. ALL local leaders are silent. Political Correctness has corrupted almost everyone in law enforcement and the civil leaders of these communities. People are being injured and killed. Property is being damaged. And the silence from City Hall such you can hear a pin drop. The governor of Missouri doesn’t dare send 1 single National Guard unit to tame the violence. KCPD, Lee Summit, KCK and none of the other crime-ridden communities can keep up, but as long as metro area residents look the other way, nothing gets done. Let’s demand crime-fighting campaigns now or become Detroit!

    • DixT

This did not happen in Missouri, it happened in Kansas. Remember, there are TWO cities named “Kansas City”—one in Kansas, and one in Missouri. The Overland Park, KS area is a relatively QUIET area!!!

      • Linda North

Overland Park is part of the greater Kansas City area. These vicious acts of hate are a time for bonding together as non violent human beings and help with healing. Forget the Missouri Kansas thing for a while DixT.

    • Joe

He isn’t mentally ill by medical standards. He is a radicalized hater and an idiot. No trial is necessary. Let’s just put a bullet to his temple; however, since that isn’t going to happen, we can enjoy the thought of him spending his few remaining years locked in a box.

      • John B. Jordin Sr.

back public hanging. Do it in these stadiums we have. Charge Admission!

  • Phil Rockow

Joe to get a permit here in Ohio its a one-day course with minimal time actually shooting a gun and I guarantee if you have a permit or not you’re going to worry about getting the hell out of the gunfire, not being a hero. And probably have one more person dead. Not the gunman

    • Joe

Well, where I come from CCW class is pretty much the same – listen to some guy (top-notch, state-accredited expert) tell you all the pitfalls and responsibilities, then you go out and prove your mettle by ripping paper with an acceptable score (mine was 243 out of 250 my first time out – many years ago. I’m better now).
Yes, the first concern would be safety on your part but the next will be to ensure the safety of others, if you’re any human at all. If your first thought is to save your own hyde and screw the rest, then I don’t consider you human…

      • Gunner

As a veteran of combat, I know what it is like to be sho at, I resent you inferring that everyone would skeddalle and turn tale. I have a Purple Heart, by the way.
Do you think that I am not qualified to carry? I don’t , but I do have a CCW.

      • James B Schaller

not all people are chicken shits like you…..some of us like GUNNER ,do run towards the shooting…..and i to have done it myself…..

      • John B. Jordin Sr.

Since I was a veteran of Viet Nam and taught marksmanship for two years at Fort Knox Kentuckyall I had to do was show my DD214 and not attend the classes. I fired expert in the Army with a .45ACP and killed an NVA WITH MINE SHOOTING FROM A LIGHT Observation heliocopter. The NVA had an AK type rifle at port arms I have no idea why he didn’t shoot at me. I’m sort of glad he didn’t. I carried the .45 ACP cocked and locked in my shoulder holster. What’s that, Condition two?

I think we’re getting away from the real issue here: Is the shooter better off now if he is found not guilty by reason of insanity and has to spend the rest of his life in a mental facility? Or he is found guilty and even if he gets the death sentence, he can count on at east twenty years in prison before it is carried out. Meanwhile it is free to him. What a plan! I know how expensive Assisted Living can be. If you don’t have insurance for long-term care which most people don’t Social security just isn’t enough. I know a man who robbed a national bank so that he would either get the money or go to a Federal prison. Federal prisons are typically nicer than state prisons. I visited him in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary. To summarize, we have evolved a system that gives the elderly incentives to commit crimes! How does that grab you? I hope Liberals are reading this! The Law of Unintended consequences will get you every time.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those lost and all affected by this senseless killing Passover holiday here in Jerusalem, whom Israel
I doubt the safest country to live in

  • Richard Shuster

It isn’t about carrying guns. Yes, every Jew should own a gun. Its about the senseless killing; by a sick human being against Jews or others, for whatever pathology that exists in this persons mind or values. He deserves a fair trial and I think if found guilty the appropriate punishment is obvious. G-d bless the families affected by this crazy rampage.

    • Jasper

The appropriate punishment is death but he won’t outlive the appeals so ultimately, it will be life in prison. I hope he is miserable and drowns in his own tears of self pity.

  • Richard Thwaitesteiner

” … who was identified as 73-year old Billy Ray Lee from Brookline, Missouri, was arrested at a nearby elementary school and taken into custody. Lee, who does not have a criminal record, was said to have had occasional contact with Greene County Sheriff’s deputies, who have responded to domestic disturbances at his home at the Briarwood Mobile Home Park west of Springfield…”

  • Cindy

This just makes those of us that live in Kansas City and the surrounding areas in such a negative light. Hate is hate, don’t judge the rest of us by a few bad apples. Our hearts and prayers go out to those families that were killed and injured.

My. .This piece of meat is probably related to Hitler’s spy Scherff family. They along with Brown & Harriman Bank in New York during the1930’s & 1940’s were shut down, assets frozen for trading with the enemy. Names involved were George Herbert Scherff the 1st. Also Herbert Walker Bush. Also George Herbert Walker Scherff Sr. Known also as the apple pie American Bush family. This shooter could be related to some of the Nazi’s brought to America during Operation Paperclip. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the families & loved ones of the murdered. Wake up sheeple!!!! The true American Patriots have been been needing to take the true trash out of this country for a little over 100 years now!!!! Inform yourselves!!!!

  • Voice Of Reason

This of course was an act of terrorism by a cold blooded murderer and psychopathic monster with the same hatred towards the American way of life as the Boston Marathon and Oklahoma Federal building lunatics.
Freedom of religion was the fundamental reason for America’s beginnings and to this day we who love freedom only have our resolve to protect that and our other foundational freedoms STRENGTHENED by acts like this.
In this great nation Christians, Jews, Muslims can have our houses of worship, and our homes and schools, next to each other yet we live in peace and harmony. The pea-brained idiots like this hate-filled, hell-bound fool remind us how valuable these freedoms are. To our Jewish friends, freedom loving Americans everywhere support you and ALWAYS WILL.

r1st Blood Moon of the Four Blood Moon Tetrad of 2014-2015 is sundown tomorrow night in Israel on April 14th, 2014. That will officially be their 15th. I heard a few months back that Secretary of State John Kerry was supposed to be in Israel for some of”Peace and Security” Agreement on April 13th, 2014 between Israel & Palestine. this way: God has already stated his land shall not be Divoided. Maybe this shooter is affiliated with secret rogue societies who wish to enslave all of humanity, excluding themselves of course, & usher in Israel”their” new world order?? Theylike to accentuate the issues with horrible acts to bring attention to their desires which are portrayed to the public in false ways to get their way, just saying……..

  • Imajhawk

Why are ya’ll arguing about this like this is a city council meeting? I know free speech but ya’ll are wasting time! These comments shud be about prayers for the families involved in this senseless act of hatred and ignorance! This man will not only get what he deserves by the eyes of the law but also when we meets God! Praying for everyone!

  • stanky_nutz

His wife had to know of his hatred and was probably a major supporter of his. I think we need to investigate her as well because she is the one who has supported and backed her anti-semite husband for many years. She is as guilty as Jerry Sandusky’s wife. They are both guilty of ignorance to say the least.

  • sandi

This nutcase figured that because the victims were at a Jewish facility, that they were Jewish. Well, none of them were. Just because I stand in a garage does that make me a car? This crazy nut needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. My heart aches for the families of the victims. I don’t know any of them, but I feel their sorrow. May God be with them, with his arm around them in this time of sorrow, The fact it occurred at the beginning of Passover was not a coincidence.

Four victims (three dead), two locations, all in parking lots within minutes apart – I doubt it was a personal issue – what are the chances all the perpetrator’s targets were outside in the parking lots at the same time!
My experience tells me this was an action targeting members of a specific group. Since both locations were Jewish facilities, I’d lean heavily toward an anti-Jewish sentiment on the shooter’s part.

  • Robert

Excuse me Carrie, but what are you smoking? Random act… personal…? Really, at two different locations. Common sense, which is lacking among so many these days, says anti-Semitic act, period. I am a Jew, a U.S. Navy veteran and have a Concealed Carry Permit. Some institutions and stores have a gun free zone sign on their door and I do not go in as I refuse to be defenseless. As for hate crimes, the act of killing someone is the same whether you hate them or not, they are still dead. The punishment should be swift and harsh, but neither happen these days in our feel good justice system. Let’s get back to having prisons instead of correctional centers.

  • Joe

I read Don Saliman’s statement as, “At least we know what to expect and look out for it”. Here in the heartland, we go about our lives oblivious to the pending threats. Some have suggested that trained, armed citizens (as in, say, Israel) is a disaster waiting to happen. On the contrary – if US citizens would prepare, train and equip for this type of situation, the predators would think twice before acting because they would no longer have dominance on the “playing field” (after all, it’s really just a game to them, regardless of their “justifications”.

  • Don Saliman

please explain why my comments and thoughts are so ignorant?

I was born and raised in America and it is not like I have no idea of what it is like to live in America and Israel.

I never would call anyone thoughts ignorant, it is just my feelings

  • FallenWorldSon (@Meek1NotWeak1)

Agreed, there would be no crossfire. The gunman might have gotten off one shot. The next and last shot woulld have been from a responsible citizen with a CCW permit. Shooter gone, lives saved. Regardless, the media would make it about guns, not mentally ill NAZI scum with evil intent.

As far as intent is concerned, there is no doubt that this was an intentional crime directed at Jewish targets.

  • Joe

Thank you for the contributions that you and your son make. You have a right to be proud! LE is one of the hardest and most unappreciated jobs out there. The vast majority of people have no understanding of the dedication and sacrifice put forth every day by these men and women. Thank you again for supporting your son and his colleagues in protecting us.

  • jeffrey a friedberg

That’s his problem, not mine. I didn’t ASK for him to do ANY of that and I don’t NEED him to do any of that.

Police are a new invention, and I’m not impressed. He’s a tool of the State.

  • Pamela Damsky

I can’t believe this has happened.there is so much hatred in this world why is that.
And now people have lost their lives right before the Jewish holiday Passover.
my heart and soul goes out to the lost ones who are no longer with us.
this man deserves to be put away he’s 70 years old just put them to death.
PS.for those of you who do not know hatred is wrong

  • Cathy Jarvis

Unfortunately Don, it is getting this way. My heart and prayers to the familys and victims of this senseless and henious act of terrorism. And the boy and hius Grandfather wern’t even Jews. Why this man wasn’t on the Radar of Law Enforecemnet given his background is stunning to me.

  • Joe

Way off base, dude. If we didn’t have cops, you wouldn’t get a ticket for doing 120 mph down the freeway. But who’s going to keep others from running over your sorry a** or cleaning up the mess when you hit the wall? You see, cops are the ones who keep things organized so we can all COEXIST! (No, it’s not a “me and only me” experience we’re living in – you got to learn to live WITH others!

  • jeffrey a friedberg

Joe, pick up horse ____ and run.

You can’t tell me a freeking THING about this world.

Cops take down your crime incident reports; cops call the ambulance; cops haul away the dead.

  • Joe

PenPal – you really show your insensitivity and ignorance on this one! If you aren’t in LE to “Protect & Serve” the community (spelled “all of us”), you’re out of a job. No one with a self-centered attitude survives the scrutiny of the city/county/state lawyers or their peers.
The vast majority who go into LE do so to help others. The few who do it because they want the power are flushed out very quickly (the community doesn’t need the lawsuits they’d generate).
Seems to me your viewpoint heavily suggest what side of the law you fall on….

  • Joe

OK, jeff. You’ve jumped off the radar of the current thread. It’s obvious, from this and your previous posts, that your intent on being here is to insult, intimidate and infuriate – and nothing more. You’re a news-post predator who seeks out what you think is the weaker of the herd so you can feel anonymously clever – neither of which are true. Did you use an email address to register here? You obviously have an IP address! You need to grow up.
So no one can tell you anything – I bet your friends and family will back that up. I’m a Volunteer Lieutenant in my local major county Sheriff’s Office. I deal with law enforcement personnel on a daily basis – without pay or expectation. I do so because I’ve seen first hand the dedication and sacrifice I’ve previously referred to. These are EXCEPTIONAL people – nothing like the vermin that try to pull off the deeds this guy in Kansas did – or that YOU try to.
Suggestion – seriously make an effort to view the world outside your little world by volunteering to make a difference at whatever agency offers help to those in need – I mean REAL need. You choose.
I expect some scathing response but I won’t respond. I’ve already made my treatise here. Anything you have to say will only serve to support and embellish the comments above.

  • ConcernedTrueAmerican

It”s usually criminals, thugs and or mentally unstable people who use whatever means possible to harm innocent people. Proven in every instance where citizens of any region voluntarily or were forced to have their weapons confiscated. Crime rises. Other weapons such as knives become the weapons of choice. England”s statistics prove that now. A weaponless society is ripe for foreign invasion. So is an unprotected border. American”s dead patriotic souls have allowed us to protect ourselves from criminals &a tyrannical government. There will always be someone or something out there that wants your utopia or wishes to destroy your utopia. I hope we all will be able to protect our utopias. History has proven sadly that it can”t be accomplished by throwing cottonballs…..A Society gets back what it puts in. Citizens are a Country”s most valuable asset to patriotic true blue leaders. Greedy & compromised leaders have forsaken American Patrioti Human Beings & sold US to foreigners. The Patriot Act does not protect Americans. It was enacted to take our rights away and is already terrorizing millions of Americans. It needs to be Repealed ASAP before it is too late. Washington, D.C. is not even part of the United States. Itvnoted itself Sovereign & has it”s own constitution. Last updated landwise to be10 square miles including the Mall in 1982. That part is under the control of the Crown ( 1square mile of the business district of London, but also Sovereign from England) & both of these are under the control of the Sovereign Vatican City in Rome, Italy, but not part of Italy. We did not throw cottonballs to have religious freedom from persecution or to obtain freedom. If any part of our Constitution is taken away or ignorantly given up look forward to the beginnings of the Dark Ages persecutions to resume. The NWO followers & supporters don”t realize they are used for a means to an ultimate hidden agenda & are & will be 100% disposable. They have “power & prestige” in this life, but their generational offspring will eventually suffer under the world created by these fools. The shooter fell into a baited trap of hate with no knowledge of a correct path. Do not ever fall for false propaganda like Hitler used. German citizen”s weapons were also confiscated. LOOK at what happened to them….Traitors to our Constitution ishould be in jail. Foreign spies & anyone who dares enact a law against our great Constitution should be jailed, no political correct questions allowed…..The World said Never Again after WW2…..well it never died….it just moved…..

  • Kevin Tarrant

Banning crack, cocaine and heroine has done a great job of keeping these deadly drugs off the street. Hasn’t it?

Ever heard of Kennisaw, GA? They HAD one of the highest violent crime rates in America until they required every citizen to own a firearm. Now they have one of the lowest.

Don’t let facts get in the way of your liberal socialistic agendas Mr O’Sheep.

  • John B. Jordin Sr.

It is not something voted on by politicians. It has beeb ruled by the Supreme Court to be a constitional right. If you don’t like it amend the Constitution just like America did to make income taxes constitutional! Yeah, that’s right Income Taxes used to be unconstitutional l! check out the 16th amendment , I believe.
