Kansas City veterans have mixed opinions about quality of care

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The chief whistleblower in the veterans affairs waiting list scandal spoke out over the weekend. Dr. Samuel Foote stands by his claim that 40 veterans died waiting for care at the VA hospital in Phoenix.

After making an appointment, veterans are supposed to be able to see a doctor in a timely manner — 14-30 days, but in at least 11 VA medical
centers across the country veterans were placed on secret waiting lists. The scandal alleges that 40 veterans died waiting for medical care.

After we reported the story on Friday we had dozens of comments from veterans. We also had two veterans who wanted to speak out about the scandal, offering opposite viewpoints.

One veteran says the VA saved his life and the other says the VA manipulated his records.

“Here at the VA, I don’t know what happened in Arizona that was a bad situation,” Victor Anderson, veteran, said. “My heart goes out to the people affected, but here at the Kansas City VA, I received immaculate treatment even when I didn’t want the treatment I seem to get it.”

But one Kansas City veteran isn’t as pleased with the quality of care he received.

“I just wanted my benefits,” Mark Williams, veteran, said. “I had no idea they manipulated records until a doctor they sent me to pointed it out, and I had to come start fighting for it and then just more and more revealed.”

There is a new whistleblower website: VAOversight.org. Anyone can report any wrongdoings and remain anonymous.

    “Veterans are supposed to be able to see a doctor in a timely manner — 14-30 days”. Yeah right! It always takes me around two months to see my doctor. My last appointment took over two months and when I got there they told me that my doctor had called in sick and that I would have to reschedule. After rescheduling I had to wait another 2 months, so it took me over 4 months to see my doctor. The phone system is an absolute nightmare. Its easier to contact my cable company and I’d rather have a root canal than deal with my cable company. The VA is extremely under staffed and always has been. You cant provide quality health care if you don’t have the people to do it. This falls squarely on the Government. The Government has no problem wasting Hundreds of Billions of dollars on programs that have failed for decades but they sure don’t seem too concerned about providing quality health care for the men and women that fought and died for our freedom.
