Dead, 45 ton whale washes ashore … again
SAN DIEGO — A 45 ton, 57-foot-long dead fin whale washed ashore again near Border Field State Park in San Diego on Saturday.
Officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) believe it’s the same whale that washed ashore on Monday last week due to its measurements and amount of decay.
The whale initially washed ashore near Point Loma last Monday. Officials dragged it back out to sea on Wednesday, but about 14 miles off the coast, the rope snapped. Although they intended to take the whale further out to sea, after the rope snapped, they believed 14 miles would suffice.
But come Saturday, the whale returned.
Officials are now considering four options: leave it, tow it back out to sea, bury it on the beach or cut it up and haul it to a landfill.
