OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- When two water lines broke and flooded several stores in the lower level of Oak Park Mall on Wednesday, a little girl's birthday was in jeopardy of turning into a huge disappointment.
One of the stores that closed at Oak Park Mall was the American Girl store, the very place where McKenna Torrix, 5, of Oklahoma planned to get her birthday present, a doll named Isabelle.
The family drove five hours from Oklahoma to buy Isabelle, but when they arrived they discovered the store was closed due to flooding.
"I started crying bad," McKenna said.
Security guards were busy redirecting traffic, but when they heard McKenna's story and saw her tears, they got her into the store to get Isabelle.
"We begged security to let us in so that we can just buy a doll," said Shelly Torrix. "They were so awesome to us in there. Everybody helped us. I was so shocked that they let us in because they could've just said 'Go away.'"
So now McKenna has Isabelle to hug and kiss. She loves her "matching pajamas and a matching tutu."
The family was relieved they didn't have to extend their trip to Dallas, where the nearest American Girl store is located.
