OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Police are investigating after officers were involved in a shooting at apartments located at 56th and Marty on Thursday night. No police officers were hurt, but a suspect was struck and reportedly suffered serious injuries.
FOX 4's Judy Le reported from the scene that the incident began as a welfare check at about 3:40 p.m. on Thursday and neighbors said that officers were there for approximately two hours before shots were heard.
Overland Park police haven't confirmed how many shots were fired or who fired first, but witnesses reported hearing at least five gunshots, with at least one fired by the suspect. One witness told FOX 4 that the man involved in the incident had been a maintenance man at the apartment complex.
The officer is being investigated and authorities remained at the scene after nightfall investigating on Thursday. While the suspect suffered serious injuries, police believe he will survive.
