KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police are investigating after a 4-year-old little boy was shot at the Charter Landing Apartment Complex in the 6000 block of Blue Hills Road Monday morning in Kansas City, Mo.

According to police, the shot came through a window on the second floor just after 10 a.m, hitting the boy in the back.  He was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital and is in critical condition. A police spokesman confirmed the child was shot in the lower back.

"You could hear him screaming," said Terria Jenkins, a neighbor. "I just feel really sorry for the child and the family."

A neighbor told FOX 4's Robert Townsend the boy was visiting relatives at the apartment complex. The neighbor said the boy was inside an apartment with an aunt and several other children at the time of the shooting.

A woman who wanted to remain anonymous says she ran to comfort and help the little boy.

"I got a towel and was wiping him down or whatever and just talking to him. His aunt was talking to him consistently because he was just,.. 'I want to go to sleep. No baby you can't go to sleep,'" the woman described.

The woman said she tried to help the boy's aunt keep him awake.

"I was whispering in his ear and talking to him. He would tell me what his name was repetitively and tell me his favorite color," she said. "I would have him say his numbers to me. His auntie was in the other ear and I don't know who she was on the phone with, but they were trying to tell her to turn the baby over."

One man was taken away from the scene in handcuffs while another man was questioned extensively at the scene before a metro bus took him and about six others to police headquarters for questioning.
