KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A family of nine is safe after a fire tore through their home near 69th & South Benton in Kansas City, Mo.

Four adults and five children escaped the early morning house fire that started shortly after two o'clock Tuesday morning.

Firefighters called for backup from police to help calm family members down because they were screaming at firefighters. The Red Cross is helping the family find a place to stay.

The battalion chief says the flames engulfed the roof of the house and at one point the roof collapsed, so his crew had to fight the fire defensively from the outside. The fire was under control very quickly but there have been a lot of hidden hotspots, which kept firefighters on the scene throughout the morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
