KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City firefighters put a quick stop to an early morning house fire at 3714 Elmwood.  The call came in just before 4 a.m. about a fire at the two-story house.

Several fire units responded to the scene because it wasn't clear if the home was occupied or not.  After an initial sweep of the house no one was found inside.

"It appears the house has not been lived in for some time," said the Battalion Chief on the scene, "there were lots of indications like lots of junk mail."

The fire appears to have started near the stairwell on the first floor and burned up to the second floor.

No word yet on the estimate of damages or the cause.
