KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A 10-year-old girl died Sunday after someone drove by her house and opened fire. She has been identified as Machole J. Stewart.

FOX 4's Megan Brilley reports that an SUV drove by her home, located in the 1400 block of New Jersey, and started shooting. Bullets flew into the living room, fatally striking Stewart.

Police say the call came in just after 7 p.m. and that the girl died at the scene. Her family says they'll remember her bright spirit.

It's absolutely terrible," cousin Patrick Blackman said. "It's nothing that wouldn't make you smile about her. Everything about her would make you smile."

There are also reports that cars were shot at on the street and several have shattered windshields. Police say the shooting went on for a couple of blocks with dozens of shell casings left on the street.

"The crime scene is pretty lengthy. It's a couple blocks. There were some vehicles struck and house struck. It's very, very unfortunate and very, very sad. An innocent juvenile was in the way of whatever this was. Not sure if that house was the intended target," KCKPD spokeswoman Amber Hickerson said.

A vigil for 10-year-old Stewart will be held at her family's church on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 6pm.  Forest Grove Baptist Church is located at 1417 North 9th Street in Kansas City, Kan.
