KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- With thousands of metro kids playing in little league football programs as well as school district competition, FOX 4 News decided to investigate the quality of the helmets being used by teams.

Head injuries have become a major issue in impact sports like football, so we asked school districts and independent little league programs to provide records of their helmet purchases, use, and maintenance. We wanted to know if the helmets conform to NOCSAE - The National Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment- standards.

Most all of the metro school districts responded with records. Only two of the little leagues in the area provided records, though several others did provide statements. A major national league didn't respond at all.

Our story highlights the importance not only of good equipment, but also good coaching. And it spotlights the challenges some of the inner city youth leagues face when it comes to finding affordable equipment for cash strapped programs and families.

You can also check on your school district or program's link to see the documents provided to FOX 4 News as part of our investigation, if those records were released.
