BEDFORD, Va. — A Virginia man launched an event on facebook that is spreading across the nation, in a show of support for the work of law enforcement.

D.J. Jessup organized “Blue Light Week” on facebook and sent out 190 invites to facebook friends to participate.

“In 24 hours people shared 28,000 invites,” Jessup said.

The former Petersburg police officer and Sussex Sheriff’s deputy said he could not just sit back and watch the hatred he saw posted on social media directed at law enforcement after the controversial grand jury decisions in Ferguson, Mo., and New York City.
