KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two days remain for uninsured Americans to get health insurance and avoid the tax penalty for 2015. The deadline is Sunday night at midnight.

Money motivated Lanita Davis to come to Swope Health Services to enroll in health insurance.  Davis recently did her 2014 taxes and found she has to pay a $95 penalty for not having insurance last year, and her penalty could be close to $1,000 if she doesn't have insurance this year.

"I better get in and do it right away," said Davis.

Sunday is the deadline for the uninsured to get 2015 coverage. It's also the deadline if you had coverage last year and want to change plans to get a better deal.

"Their premiums did rise, some people even seeing their premiums triple," said Karimah Baptiste, the enrollment manager at Swope.

She says unlike last year, there have been no glitches at www.healthcare.gov

"Oh, my goodness. The website is working perfectly.  Very, very efficient," said Baptiste.

Still, she encourages people to get help in person. Swope is hosting a free event Saturday (See details of it and other events below).

Baptiste says close to a third of people who've sought help at Swope have learned they don't qualify for subsidies to help pay for their coverage. They fall in the coverage gap that was created when Missouri and Kansas didn't expand Medicaid.

"We still want people to try. Absolutely," she said.

Those who don't qualify will get an exemption, meaning they won't have to pay the tax penalty.

Davis says the penalty was her main motivation, but she also looks forward to getting a medical check-up with her new coverage.

"Make sure everything is okay from top to bottom," she said.

The penalty for not having coverage this year is $325 per adult or two percent of your income, whichever is higher.
