KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Two weeks into the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, fans have seen some great racing. With two months to go before the race at Kansas Speedway, a major announcement created a buzz on Monday.
The sponsor of the May 9th, Saturday night race is Nickelodeon and the name of the race, the SpongeBob SquarePants 400.
Speedway president Pat Warren says title sponsorship is important in many ways; it brings in big money and it sets a tone. In this case it reminds everyone that Kansas Speedway is a family friendly environment and the race also falls on Mother's Day weekend.
Some fans called it a disgrace, and can't believe a cartoon character is the title sponsor.
But others, like Gladstone mother Jennifer Neighbors, say this is a brilliant idea. She's new to the sport and a mom, and firmly believes you can enjoy both the family and racing atmosphere.
"It is, it is very smart idea, to bring in something the kids will like. Because once you get the kids and the wife in, you're good to go," Neighbors explained.
Speedway officials are happy to hear from fans like Neighbors and hope to see more families get into NASCAR.
"NASCAR is a very family oriented sport; people come out here, have a great time, really all you have to do is pay for the price of admission. You park for free, you can bring in your own food and drink, and so for a family it can be a very affordable experience," Warren said.
The Camping World Truck Series race is Friday May 8th with the SpongeBob SquarePants 400 on Saturday night. For the old school fans, the Kansas Lottery 300 and Hollywood Casino 400 are in October.
