SUGAR CREEK, Mo. -- The Highway 291 bridge over the Missouri River has closed effective immediately due to emergency repairs. Inspectors found deterioration so significant that they were forced to close it. Approximately 11,000 vehicles travel over it on a daily basis. Drivers traveling northbound will be moved onto the southbound Route 291 bridge, making traffic run one lane each way.

On April 14, the Missouri Department of Transportation shut down the bridge from I-70 East to I-35 South in the downtown Kansas City loop because of deterioration.

The Route 291 bridge is 66-years-old.
