KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A history teacher from St. Therese School is headed on an honor flight to Washington D.C. with veterans Wednesday morning.

Bill Freund and his seventh and eighth grade students have been involved with honor flights for 14 years. Freund and his students have met the honor flights at Kansas City International Airport as they arrived home because he wanted the veterans to know how much they are appreciated.

Freund’s students raised $950 to send him and a veteran on the Honor Flight, but they were short $300. Students decided to then nominated Freund for FOX 4's Pay It Forward in November.

Students and staff held a special assembly where the FOX 4 crew had the opportunity to surprise him.
