KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 22-year-old woman knows she could have lost her life over the weekend when two men threatened her with a gun and stole her car from the View High Lake Apartment Complex in South Kansas City.

The woman, Leah Shaw, says she always parks her car in the same general location in the parking lot near 97th Terrace and Willow, where she lives.

She arrived home after work and parked her car and was heading toward her apartment when the two men approached her.

"And they were like, 'Hey can we borrow your phone so we can call a ride?'" she recalled.

Initially, Shaw says she didn't feel in danger.

"The taller guy looked like he was 18-19 and the shorter guy probably was maybe 17 or 16. He looked like a kid. That's why I didn't feel like I was about to get mugged," she said.

But then, one of the robbers pointed a gun at her face while the other rummaged through her purse looking for money.

"He pulled the gun out and then I put my head back and was like, 'Uh' because he put his hand on my face," she said. "I was scared."

Shaw says she got a bruise on her ear because the gunman was rubbing her face with his hand.

Shaw works as a cook at a local restaurant. She credited her ability to keep her cool during the ordeal to one thing.

"That's because I was raised by a brave mom," she said.

Shaw plans to get a registered firearm to protect herself, she says. Police recovered her car, but are still looking for the carjackers.
