KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- You can crash someone’s iPhone with a simple text message. The worst part is that you don’t even need to open the text message. A code you'd never hope to receive doesn’t even make sense, and has the ability to shut down your iPhone.

text“People started calling me and saying their iPhone was crashing, their iMessage was crashing,” said Michael Weston, known as the Kansas City iPhone Doctor.

Weston said he started hearing about the message a month ago.

“Their friends text them a message, they know it’s a prank. They found it on the Internet,” he said.

A user on the online forum Reddit discovered this hack and made it public. That means any iPhone user can easily fall victim.

“They type in this code they find on the Internet and basically, they push send and their friend’s phone crashes,” Weston said.

Good-case scenario, the iPhone turns back on within 15 seconds. Worse-case, Weston says that you will have to buy a new phone.

One tip to get around the glitch is to have someone send another text message to you to push the prank one out of the way. Apple confirmed the problem and is working on rolling out an update to fix it.
