5-year-old girl pulled from lake at Watkins Mill State Park pronounced dead

KEARNEY, Mo. — A 5-year-old girl was pronounced dead Saturday morning. Police say the child had been fighting for her life after being underwater for more than 10 minutes while swimming at an area beach on Thursday.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol Nevaeh Boston had wandered away from her family while swimming at the beach at Watkins Mill State Park around 3:00 P.M. on Thursday. The St. Joseph-area child was at the beach with her mother and two other siblings.

Paramedics first brought the girl to Excelsior Springs Hospital, then transferred her to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where she was placed on life support until she succumbed to her injuries early Saturday morning.
