Man charged with murder of 27-year-old KC woman

Dewayne A Cornelius, dob: 10/10/1979, faces charges of Murder in the 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —  Jackson County prosecutors charged a Kansas City man with the May 25, 2015, murder of Nicole Appleberry, 27.

According to police, they received a call from a woman who said she returned to her home near 28th and Walrond and found her friend dead inside just after 10 p.m.  Appleberry had been shot in the back. A witness told police that the victim had argued with Dewayne Cornelious, 35, that day.

Another witness told police the defendant came to her home the night that the victim was killed and stated that “he shot Nikki.”

Cornelius was charged with 2nd degree murder and armed criminal action.

He was being held on $500,000 bond.
