KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police are investigating the death of an 19-year-old man, found Thursday morning near Drury Avenue and Fifth Street in Kansas City, Mo.

Police were dispatched to the scene at about 8:23 a.m.

According to friends and family, Demitri Reid was found face down in a bed of rocks in an alley not far from his girlfriend's home. Victoria Johnson says neighbors heard multiple gunshot. She said Demetri was shot several times. She says on Thursday night he left her home and was walking to a neighborhood gas station when he was shot.

"He was texting me and he was going to get cigarettes," Johnson said.

Demetri's mother and other relatives and friends gathered at the scene.

"I'm hoping it's justice for his mother and him," said Johnson. "I feel really bad, like I said. I couldn't even put myself in her position."

Police were initially called the death suspicious, but on Wed. August 12, the case was labeled a homicide.

Police did not release the identity of the victim.
