Students at Staley High School kick off new school year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. --  Students in the North Kansas City School District headed back to school on Wednesday, and students at Staley High School decided to kick the school year off with a bang.

The school invited students out on the field for fun school-spirit filled event to get them excited for their first day back in the classroom.

"We're so excited to have the first day of school today," Principal Clark Mershon said.

There are more than 18,000 students in the North Kansas City School District. The district, which consists of 21 elementary schools, five middle schools and four high schools,  employs more than 3,000 individuals.

Over the summer the district upgraded their security by adding lights to parking lots and implementing a new system to screen visitors.
