SHAWNEE, Kan. — Water One crews are working to makes repairs after a large water main broke Tuesday morning.

The break occurred near Nieman and 54th Street. Police say the water main break was reported around 6 a.m.

Shawnee police say the break caused crews to shut down northbound traffic at 55th Street. They said they expect the closure to impact traffic because the break caused a sinkhole.

Mandy Cawby with Water One says the break occurred in an 8-inch main.

Crews weren’t sure yet what caused the break. Water crews were on the scene to shut off the valve.  Water One estimated that a dozen people are without water.

As of noon on Tuesday, water had been restored to most of the homes.
