KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Wednesday's Powerball Jackpot was an estimated $301 million. Statistically speaking, the drawing was one of your last best chances to win the Powerball jackpot. Next week the national jackpot adds 10 more numbers, increasing odds from 1 in 175 million to 1 in 292 million.
With every Powerball ticket purchased ahead of the drawing were dreams of striking it rich, and a new life of luxury.
“I know I wouldn’t be going to work no more,” Sylvester Brown said buying his ticket in Riverside.
“I'd move away from Kansas City, because my cousins would be following me,” Sam Nelson said.
Powerball’s $301 million jackpot is the biggest in seven months, and one of the largest since November of 2012.
Alex Asher of Camden Point bought tickets for that $587 million jackpot. She didn’t win, but her friends Mark and Cindy Hill did. She admits, she thought that might be the last she ever saw of them, instead they are still staples in the community.
“They stuck around and they supported our community so that’s really awesome,” she said.
Construction crews are busy erecting the steel beams for the new Camden Point Fire Department and EMS Center with financial backing from the Hills. The lottery win is not just changing one family’s life, but perhaps saving the lives of those in their community, where the nearest hospital is a half-hour away.
“It’s going to be a lot more comfortable knowing that it’s right there and it will get out to our house a lot faster than it used to and we can get to emergency so much faster,” Asher said.
Lottery players in the Northland are now hoping lightning can strike the same place twice. And while Louise Opela still has dreams of an island lifestyle, she hopes anybody claiming the jackpot follows in the last big winners’ footsteps.
“I think they are great, they shared their money they helped the community, I can’t imagine anybody would win and not donate a lot to the community there’s so many causes,” she said.
The changes coming to Powerball after Saturday’s drawing are designed to get even bigger jackpots, after months of smaller prizes and fewer players.
Winning numbers for Wednesday's drawing were 21, 39, 40, 55, 59 with the Powerball number, 17.
