KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An icon in the Kansas City bbq scene has passed away.

Dr. Rich Davis, the creator and entrepreneur behind KC Masterpiece bbq sauce, died Tuesday night.

Davis was born in 1926.

He was a doctor before winning the “best sauce award” at the American Royal barbecue competition. That allowed him to quit his job and focus on barbecue.

Davis later sold his sauce to Kingsford.

Funeral services have not been announced.
