KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A homicide suspect was taken into custody late Tuesday after a standoff that lasted nearly five hours.
KCPD Chief Darryl Forte says the person was initially wanted for aggravated assault, but a stabbing victim has since died, and now the case is a homicide.
Police say they were sent to an apartment in the 1300 block of Woodland on Tuesday night and found the victim outside of the apartment at about 7 p.m. After attempting CPR, he was taken to a hospital and pronounced deceased.
An operation 100 was called, negotiators tried to talk the suspect out of the home. At one point officers got in the front door but backed out when the suspect became combative.
Shortly before midnight, the suspect gave up and came out.
It is not clear what happened between the two men. Investigators believe that the suspect is a close relative of the victim.
The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Fredrick Burtin of Kansas City, Mo.
