KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Home videos: Pan, Pawn Sacrifice,
- PAN (PG)
Big, bombastic and bloated, “Pan” is a noisy, overlong and overly flashy Peter Pan origin story that was one of the biggest box office bombs of the year. Hugh Jackman is the pirate Blackbeard who kidnaps English orphans to mine fairy dust in a dismal Neverland quarry, young Peter Pan among them.
Ouch! This movie was really bad. Wish the people who run Warner Bros. had called me before they green lit this project. I could have told them that not many people wanted to see another Peter Pan movie. They made it anyway and really did a terrific job of making it poorly.
All of the charm we’ve come to expect from Peter Pan has been replaced with a messy, slapdash plot and enough eye candy to give you cavities. There are certainly moments of creativity on display, but this “Pan” deserves to be panned.
Overly contrived and not very fun. And completely over-acted. I grew old watching it. Very old.

- PAWN SACRIFICE (PG-13)
Toby Maguire gives a strong performance as the mentally unbalanced chess master Bobby Fischer in “Pawn Sacrifice,” a drama about the famous 1972 world championship match with Boris Spassky, well played by Liev Schreiber.
There are more than a few interesting moments. And the acting is solid.
Viewers will probably experience the same frustration with Fischer’s erratic behavior as his associates did, but the performances and attention to period detail make it a reasonably interesting time capsule.
It's a solid movie. And Toby Maguire is very good.
