LAWRENCE, Kan. — A 16-year-old boy who has been charge in the stabbing death of his grandma appeared in court on Thursday.

The juvenile was ordered to be held in custody until his next court appearance on Jan. 20.

The 16-year-old was arrested on Tuesday.

The teen told police that he made a 911 call from a nearby friend’s home after finding his grandmother, Deborah Bretthauer, 67, dead in her own home.

Neighbors said they never heard any kind of ruckus Tuesday, but knew something was wrong when officers arrived at the home late Monday night.
