ALTON, Ill. -- An 11-year-old boy is dead after being shot at a housing complex in Alton.

Police were dispatched to the apartment complex when the shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. Monday.

Madison County Sheriff's Department Maj. Jeff Connor says the boy was shot in the parking lot area of the recreation center in the middle of the housing complex.

The 11-year-old was playing basketball with a group of kids when a red car drove by and fired several shots. Police do not believe the boy was specifically targeted. They say no one else was hit.

A 17-year-old picked up the boy after he was shot and tried to help him. That teen did not want to speak on camera, but his mother told the gunman to turn himself in.

"You know who you are, you should come on down," she told FOX 2 in St. Louis.

The victim was taken to a hospital, but died.

Connor says he's unsure if the boy lived in the complex.

More than 25 detectives assembled at the Alton Police Department after the shooting and planned to continue the investigation through the night.
