OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --  A smash and grab at a local jewelry store has police on alert and a family trying to put its business back together.

FOX 4's Shannon O'Brien talked to the owners of Precious Metals & Gems, who said they've dealt with this kind of crime before.

Police said the two suspects entered the building when they broke the glass front door, a brash act even at 3:20 a.m. on Monday, considering the store faces busy Metcalf Avenue.

Surveillance cameras captured two men smashing glass and entering the building with dufflebags to rob the place.

Phillip Ruttan Jr. manages the store his family owns, which has been in business for more than 30 years. They said they've been the target of thieves just once before.

Ruttan said he empties the display cases every night, placing his valuable pieces in huge safes, but he said the burglars got away with some merchandise he had in the back.

"Everything that they did get was stuff that was either being processed or working on at the time," Ruttan explained.

The suspects covered their faces to conceal their identities from the cameras, but one camera was able to capture a fairly clear shot of one of the men.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect, or has any information about the crime is asked to call the TIPS hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
