KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two people were shot, and a subsequent rollover crash prompted an investigation that shut down 71 Highway's northbound lanes at 39th Street for a significant amount of time on Thursday night.

Police tell FOX 4 that officers were sent to the scene at about 8:20 p.m. and found the vehicle that had rolled over had bullet holes in the exterior. The driver and passenger were both sent to a hospital with gunshot injuries, one has life-threatening injuries, the other is said to be in serious condition.

Witnesses at an apartment complex near 71 Highway say they heard loud gunshots and came outside to see a car flipped upside down.

Witnesses say several shots were fired – and then they heard a loud crash. When they came outside, they saw a man, covered in blood, laying on the side of the highway.

They also saw a woman suffering from a gunshot wound, alongside another woman and two little boys. Police believe someone was shooting at their car – and possibly caused them to crash.

Officials tell FOX 4 neither child was shot. We’ll continue to follow developments with the victims’ conditions and the investigation, and provide updates as more details are confirmed.
