LA CYGNE, Kan. -- A high school teacher at Prairie View High School in La Cygne, Kansas has resigned and now faces charges of unlawful sexual relations.
The Linn County sheriff says nine or ten counts could potentially be filed against him.
According to the school superintendent, the teacher's resignation on May 9 for the next school year was not related to his arrest.
The 31-year-old Prairie View High School language arts teacher was arrested on May 19 at the high school, over accusations that he had unlawful sexual relations with a student.
"I don't know where it will end up, but we're going to run it into the ground," Paul Filla, Linn County Sheriff said.
The teacher had worked for Prairie View Unified School District since 2011. Some said he was respected for his strong teaching.
"When they came in and the school district notified us, it was a bombshell. Completely surprised," said Chris Kleidosty, Prairie View Schools superintendent.
The teacher, who is not being identified by FOX 4 at this time because he has not been officially charged, is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.
La Cygne is an hour directly south of Kansas City.
