Woman who died in Platte County Sheriff’s transport van found with seatbelt around her neck

PLATTE CITY, Mo. — Officials released further details Friday about a woman who died while under arrest and in their custody. Emma Lewis, 50, died last Thursday in the back of a transport van. According to the incident report, deputies arrived at a Platte County home to serve a protection order filed by her daughter. Lewis reportedly argued and struggled with the deputies as they put her in handcuffs.Deputies say she kicked and screamed as they buckled her into the back of the van. They said when they closed the door, she was sitting upright and buckled in. However, when they arrived at the jail, she was face down, unresponsive, with a seat belt around her neck.

Officers could not revive her.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department has been called upon to investigate.
