KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A heart-tugging case of animal abuse has left a pit bull severely injured. Animal rescuers at Chain of Hope KC say someone intentionally threw 'M-80' firecrackers at the dog.

The rescuers believe Helen the pit bull would`ve died had a neighbor in the area not found the injured dog just in the nick of time.

It`s been a tough and unbelievable two weeks for this female pit bull, given the name by the staff at Chain of Hope.

“As I approached her I thought she looked super bad. She had a lot of green gunk all over her eyes,” said Kate Quigley.

She said she got a disturbing phone call on July 3 about the fireworks attack.

“The other eye is directly injured from the fireworks. They just thought it was funny to torture her like that and threw those at her,” Quigley said.

But there`s nothing funny about the brutal attack on the one-and-a-half-year-old dog, who is now blind and deaf.

Furthermore, her front, left paw that was nearly blown off, may now have to be amputated. The frightened, injured dog didn`t resurface until 10 days after the fireworks attack, during which time she contracted heartworms.

“She has this horrible scar on the side of her face which is previous to this, so what happened to this dog, god only knows,” said Quigley.

Despite all she`s been through, rescuers remain hopeful there`s a new home waiting for Helen.

'We`re just gonna try to give her the best life we can, and hopefully there`s a special person out there that will welcome her into their home,” said Quigley.

Nearly two weeks later, caretakers said they've had to remove one of Helen's eyes, and still have not been able to find her a forever home.
