KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police are investigating a homicide Thursday night in the area of 60th and Highland. Officers were sent to the scene just before 8 p.m.

One man was found dead at that location. He was identified Friday as Cary Smith, 47.  Police said on Friday that it may have started as a fight at the nearby apartment complex that spilled into the street.

Officers haven't found or arrested the suspect yet, and urge anyone with information to assist investigators. Right now they say the suspect may be driving a black Pontiac with a temporary tag.

"We cant do our jobs without the community. The community is so important in what we do. It's going to take the community to let us know what happened here tonight. And to keep your community safe, you have to come forward when you see something," Sergeant Stacey Graves said.

FOX 4's Katie Banks spoke with neighbors who said they heard gunshots and later saw the man's body in the street, but didn't see how it happened. If you did or know anything that will help investigators, call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.

Before this homicide, there were 59 homicides so far in 2016. At this time last year there were 48.
