KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A local homeowner turned the tables on an attempted burglary suspect  early Tuesday morning and shot the suspect with his own gun.

The incident happened in the 6100 block of East 97th Street, near Bannister and Blue Ridge.

A preliminary investigation shows the suspect was shot in the stomach then taken to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Jackson County prosecutors charged the suspect, Monte Hill, 30, of Grandview, with burglary and armed criminal action.

The first call to police came around 2 a.m., from ADT alarm company after something set off the motion sensor in the garage. A minute later a woman called police to say a man was trying to break into her house.

Then another call came from a man at the house who said he had just shot an intruder with the suspect's own gun.

The man and woman in the home were not injured.

FOX 4's Kathy Quinn spoke with the homeowner's neighbor John Dudley who said he heard the homeowner knock on his door around 2 a.m. When Dudley answered the door, the homeowner allegedly said he had just shot someone. Dudley told FOX 4 he called police because his neighbor was so upset and the suspect needed medical attention.

"He said someone was trying to break into his home," Dudley said. "He got the gun from him and show him."

Dudley adds he's heard gunfire in the area lately.

Prosecutors requested bond set at $75,000.
