Search continues in St. Joe for possible drowning victim

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —   Emergency crews were called early Wednesday morning to search for a possible drowning victim in the Missouri River in St. Joseph.

Around 3 a.m., a female reported she and a male friend were swimming in the river near Riverfront Park. After a while in the river, he did not resurface.

Water rescue crews spent the next hour and a half traveling up and down the river all the way from Riverfront Park South, to the city limits. A heavy rainstorm hampered the search.

“It’s challenging,” Sgt. Wayne Byrom, St. Joseph Police Department said. “They’ve been up and down the river several times and for safety issues now and their safety and all the rescuers attempting to search, they’ve temporarily stopped the search effort. We’ll resume as soon as it’s safe and weather permits us to.”

KQTV reports the search resumed at 7 a.m.
