KANSAS CITY, Mo. — KCI opened a new cell phone waiting lot on Monday that is closer to the terminals.
Leaders at the airport hope the additional cell phone lot will reduce traffic when waiting to pick up passengers. Leaders say they’ve had a problem with people parking illegally at the terminal or continually driving around the airport waiting for flights.
The new lot is less than a mile away near the air traffic control tower.
Before Monday, people were asked to park several miles away in the economy parking lots.
KCI was one of the last major airports to add a cellphone waiting area.
About five years ago, the airport began allowing limited free parking in one of its long-term parking lots.
Leaders at the airport say many people missed the signs and tended to park across the airport.
The new lot will have more prominent signs, and will be closer to the terminal.
Maximum wait time is 45 minutes, but there are two free hours in economy parking.
This new cellphone lot is one of several improvements planned for KCI. There will also be better lighting, signage in the terminals, better WI-FI coverage and more seating in the terminals.
