World record-holding cheese carver amazes crowds with her skills in Leawood

LEAWOOD, Kan. -- A world record-holding artist was cutting the cheese in Leawood on Thursday. And it's all Gouda.

Sarah Kaufmann of Wisconsin was carving artwork into huge blocks of cheddar at the newly renovated Hen House off 119th and Roe in Leawood.

One cheese block became Chiefs mascot KC Wolf. Kaufmann owns the world record for carving into a 925 pound block of cheese.

She says cheddar is best when creating her art, and she enjoys the benefits of working with food.

"I will never be a starving artist. I will always have something to eat," Sarah Kaufmann, Cheese Carver joked. "But people are very mystified by the fact that it's so perishable. They say, I never saw a cheese that big."

She will be carving cheese until 5:00 p.m. Thursday and will be back at the store Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 2 p.m., if you want to talk to her about how she does it.
