KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A 30-year-old man faces a first degree murder charge from a weekend shooting. The Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office charged Daryl Bagby with murder in addition to criminal possession of a firearm on Thursday.

Bagby is accused of killing Steven Sykes in the 3000 block of North 21st Street on Saturday. The shooting took place less than an hour before a police news conference to address the recent spate of homicides in KCK.

“I don’t know if it’s turf war, retaliation, drugs, whatever it is, there is no earthly reason for this to go on,” Wyandotte County District 1 Commissioner Gayle Townsend said at Saturday’s press conference.

A vigil was held later in the day, as KCK saw four homicides in five days.

Bagby is in the Wyandotte County Jail, being held on a $750,000 bond.
