“Neighbors 2” too much? “Free State of Jones” valuable? “Ninja Turtles” pokey? Popcorn Bag Home Video Reviews!

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Is "Neighbors 2" too much? "Free State of Jones" valuable? "Ninja Turtles" pokey? FOX 4's Russ Simmons and Shawn Edwards share their thoughts in this week's Popcorn Bag Home Video Reviews.

1) NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING (R)

Universal

RUSS
Seth Rogan and Zac Efron return for more crude hijinks in “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.” This time they’re joined by Chloë Grace Moretz who proves girls can be raunchy, too, when a party hardy sorority moves next door.

SHAWN
Much funnier than the first. Switching to a house full of sorority sisters that terrorize was smart and ripe for much better jokes. The girl power adds the energy.

RUSS

Sex jokes and stoner humor can only take you so far, so the formula is getting a little thin. But it has its shamelessly funny moments.

SHAWN
It's very funny and has a coherent story that works. The extras are great and include a gag reel, line-o-rama and an ultimate tailgate featurette.

2) FREE STATE OF JONES (R)

STX Entertainment

RUSS

Here's one that should have been great but just missed the mark. “Free State of Jones” is an earnest and well-meaning Civil War drama undone by a jagged structure that prevents it from being the gripping experience it should have been.

SHAWN

I agree. This movie should have been great. Matthew McConaughey passionately delivers, but his love for this project is undone by the filmmakers’ poor execution.

RUSS

Matthew McConaughey and company are fine in this historical tale, but it becomes a bit preachy and lacks a satisfying dramatic arc. Still, it’s an important, untold story that deserves to be seen by anyone seeking a better understanding of this critical time in American history.

SHAWN

It's actually a very important story.

3) TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS (PG-13)

Paramount Pictures

SHAWN

Turtle power is back. And this episode is built for the fans. It is an upgrade on the first in just every department except for Meagan Fox's acting. The cool part is the inclusion of some popular characters that were missing from the first movie and the big action set-pieces all set in New York are actually really exciting to watch even if the story is completely juvenile and slightly obnoxious. It's a fun and silly movie and the DVD is loaded with entertaining extras.

4) PELE: BIRTH OF A LEGEND (PG)

IFC Films

RUSS

“Pelé: Birth of a Legend” is a family sports drama that focuses on the early years of Brazilian soccer superstar, Pelé. It shows how the poverty-stricken youngster worked his way out of the Brazilian slums to lead the Brazilian team to the World Cup championship at age 17. While it’s an inspiring story, it’s given a very pedestrian treatment.

SHAWN

It's light but still somewhat interesting. Yes, Pele deserves a better story but this is at least a decent start. Not on World Cup levels but at least a goal.
