INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A three hour standoff is over, and two men accused of shooting and killing a man at a Walgreens parking lot are in custody,
It all started at midnight in the parking lot of Walgreens at 23rd and Sterling.
Police say two suspects robbed the victim at gunpoint and then shot him. Police say the store was closed at the time. It is not clear if the suspects and victim knew each other, but after the shooting the suspects quickly left the scene.
When police arrived, witnesses and the K-9 unit led them to an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Sterling Avenue, which is just a few blocks down the road.
"They used a variety of methods," officer John Syme with the Independence Police Department said. "There were some canine units here, and I can't really go into the particulars because it involves how that investigation was conducted and that is still open at this time, but various investigative techniques were used and they were effective in identifying and detaining the suspects."
The first suspect gave up right away, but the second one sparked a standoff by refusing to come out.
"Bringing out a tactical unit might be alarming to people, but it's for their protection, the officers, and protect the people who are here,"officer Syme said. "You know this is an apartment complex and there are people who live there and the safety of them is our priority at that point."
During the standoff, police learned the victim died from his injuries, which turned the investigation from a robbery and assault into a homicide investigation.
A short time after that, police took the second suspect into custody, and they will most likely face charges in this shooting death.
