LAWRENCE, Kan. -- A former mayor of Lawrence admitted Wednesday  that he embezzled thousands of dollars from a food bank in Douglas County, Acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said.

Jeremy Farmer, 33, admitted  to stealing more than $5,000 while working at the food pantry beginning on his arrival in 2013.

He resigned from "Just Food" in 2015.

Farmer also resigned as mayor of Lawrence last year. He faces up to 10 years in a federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

A judge did not set a sentencing date.
