ST. LOUIS -- Police say a St. Louis County police officer was killed and a suspect critically injured in an exchange of gunfire.
Officer Blake Snyder, a 33-year-old officer, was fatally wounded during the pre-dawn shooting Thursday in Green Park, a small middle-class community in south St. Louis County.
A police spokesman, Benjamin Granda, says the suspect is undergoing "life-saving treatment" after being wounded by another officer.
Granda says that almost as soon as officers responded to a disturbance call just after 5 a.m., the suspect of the disturbance began shooting, striking the officer. A second officer returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect's name hasn't been released but police say he is an 18-year-old white male.
Officer Snyder was a four-year veteran of the department and served in the Affton Southwest precinct. He is married and has a two-year-old son.
Police say his is the first on-duty death of a St. Louis County officer since October 2000.
A witness told KTVI he heard between 8 and 12 shots. The witness said he thought the loud noise may have been fireworks until he saw police lights outside.
