KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A metro mom had just parked her car outside of a birthday party, when she heard several gun shots. The next thing she knew, the shooter started speeding towards her. It happened Sunday afternoon near 46th Street and Lawn Avenue.

A perfect day to be outdoors; a sunny Sunday afternoon in Kansas City. A family near 46th and Lawn were getting ready to celebrate their grandma’s birthday.

“I was just excited to be here.”

Sarah Woods had just pulled up and parked her van, her son was sleeping in the backseat when she heard rapid gun fire.

“I heard the shots and a white car sped off,” Woods said.

Woods says she saw a white Pontiac with tinted windows speed by her, coming within just a few feet. The door was still open as the car raced down 46th Street.

“I immediately called my husband. I knew exactly what had just happened.”

Her husband ran over to the victim’s aid. He had been shot in the stomach and was losing a lot of blood.

“Somebody decides to shoot somebody in broad daylight.”

Community activist Pat Clarke says the victim is like family to him, a man in his 20s. He says small children were inside the victim’s home, when the shots rang out.

“Those kids could've gotten shot inside,” Clarke said.

The victim’s family waited near the crime scene tape, eager to get the children out, while the victim went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“I just hope he's okay,” Woods said.

A shaken-up mom joined her family for her grandmother’s birthday party, still in shock of what she witnessed.

“A sense of happiness and sadness that, hopefully he will survive but someone's life could've been taken literally right before my eyes and my children.”

Police continue to search for the suspect in this shooting. If you know anything, call Crimestoppers at (816) 474-TIPS.
