Police: 13-year-old girl abducted from Liberty, Mo. has been found safe, suspect in custody

LIBERTY, Mo. -- Police confirmed to FOX 4 that a 13-year-old subject of an AMBER ALERT has been found safe and the suspect is in custody Monday.

The AMBER ALERT was issued just before noon Monday after police said 13-year-old Amiya Morris was abducted from 530 Sarah Lane in Liberty, Mo.

Captain Andy Hedrick with the Liberty, Mo., Police Department says Amiya was found in Gladstone and is safe. The suspect, Nicholas Bejarano, was taken into custody at the scene.

"Why they were in Gladstone and what happened in the several hours they were together that's under investigation right now," Cpt. Hedrick said.

According to Liberty police, Amiya was staying with a family friend at home along Sarah Lane, which is a few blocks from Manor Hill Elementary School. Bejarano is the boyfriend of someone living at that house. Monday morning, Amiya went with Bejarano to get coffee and neither ever returned.

Police say they issued the AMBER ALERT due to Berjarano's history and the general circumstances.

"She was unaccounted for, she barely knew the man, and it was one of those things were based on history information with his criminal history we thought there was a very good reason she might be in danger," Cpt. Hedrick said.

Cpt. Hedrick said he's thankful for the people who pay attention to AMBER ALERTS because the alert helped lead authorities to Amiya quickly.

"We were able to locate her as quickly as possible," Cpt. Hedrick said.

Cpt. Hedrick said he did not have specifics surrounding how they found Amiya expect for it was a result of the alert.

Clay County prosecutors determined no charges will be filed in this case. Bejarano is still in custody for a warrant in another county.
